Truck Kills Couple, Son in Anambra

A truck on Sunday crushed a couple and one of their sons at a filling station close to the Anambra State Government House, Awka, after the trailer overran their victims’ vehicle.
Our correspondent gathered that the couple, with their four children, were travelling to their base in Enugu after spending the weekend in their Enugu Ukwu home town in Anambra State when they met their death about 40 kilometres to their destination.
The head of the family, who died in the crash, was identified as Mr. Ikechukwu Odinegwe.

According to eyewitnesses, the couple stopped to refill their car at a filling station at Agu Awka, when a trailer on a high speed rammed into the victims’ car, making its way out of the fuel station.
Passersby and officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission battled strenuously to bring our the occupants of the car.

The bodies of couple and  their first son were brought from the vehicle dead while three of their children were in critical condition and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
“It was even a miracle that some people were brought out of the vehicle alive, considering the mangled nature of the vehicle and the speed of the trailer.

“It was clear that the break of the trailer failed because the people around were flagging down the driver of the trailer to slow down but he continued speeding until this happened,” an eyewitness said.
The trailer driver fled after the crash which occurred at about 2pm.
Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Uche Eze, told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday that he had not been briefed on the accident
